Internship 2005

At a Glance 06.18.2005

In the summer of 2005, the GCA hosted the second group of students for the Summer Undergraduate Internship in Astrobiology (SUIA) . Students were paired with mentors based on their research interests and spent 90% of their time actually doing research. The summer ended with each student presenting their reaserch during one of the NAI FAR Seminar series.

Shannon Presents Shannon Tronick (Syracuse University) interned with Co-I Paul Mahaffy (NASA Goddard) continuing the research into chemical derivatization techniques for expanding the breadth of organic analysis techniques.
Jim Presents James Doty (DeMatha High School) interned with Co-I Jason Dworkin (NASA Goddard) on the simultaneous analysis of nucleobases and amino acids via LC ToF-MS.
Zach Presents Zachary Pozun (University of Pittsburgh) interned with Co-I Marla Moore (NASA Goddard) investigating chemical changes following irradiation of nitrile-containing ices.
Yana Presents Yana Radeva (Connecticut College) returned her second year studying comets with Boncho Bonev (Toledo University). Yana performed a quantitative analysis of comet C/2001 A2 (LINEAR).
Kosta Presents Constantinos Makrides (Iona College) interned with Co-I Michael DiSanti (NASA Goddard) on problems related to comets. Costa streamlined the calculation of line-by-line fluoresence efficiency factors for water for comparison with emissions seen in our comet spectra.
Karen Presents Karen Horning (Florida Inst Technology) interned with Co-I Drake Deming (NASA Goddard) searching for spectroscopic signatures of extrasolar planets in the infrared spectral region near 2 microns
